RIP Albury’s ‘Wayno’

On Wednesday night one of Albury’s (NSW - Australia) ‘icons’ (for want of a better word) passed away. Wayne Markham, better known by the locals as ‘Wayno’ was found dead lying on the ground in a street in Albury. Wayno knew the streets of Albury well as they were his home for over 20 years. But once upon a time Wayne had a ‘normal’ home life…

Wayne was born in the early 50’s and grew up in a less than modest housing commission home in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.(Jacana) I know…I grew up there too. How Wayne ended up in Albury is a mystery and although most people knew little of his past, he was certainly well known now as he shuffled down Dean Street with his worldly possessions stuffed in plastic bags or busked with his harmonica in QEII for a few bucks. In fact he was so well known to the people of Albury that he even had a Facebook following of more than 2500 fans!

Wayno will be laid to rest on Wednesday June 10. Check Border Mail for further details.

Oh, that is so sad! I remember Wayne and his mother well. Mrs Markham used to teach Religious Instruction at Jacana Primary School when I was a kid. Wayne was a bit of a wanderer even back then and could always be seen around the streets in Jacana.

May he wander the streets of heaven in peace.
