ipod’s and funking!
I work in a small office shared with 2 programming geeks guru’s. It’s an open office plan with the 2 guys at one end, (desks side by side) and I’m at the other end of the office behind a partition. I’m not behind it so I can hide and eat chocolate without them knowing (although I have been known to do this from time to time…some things you just dont share!), but more for a bit of privacy and so I don’t have to face them when ever I look up from my keyboard.
This is a ‘newish’ arrangement with us all sharing the one ‘huge’ office and its certainly having its effect on me (probably them too…but this story isn’t about ‘them’ its all about me!)
Now given that I’m at least 10 (or so…ok it’s more on the otherside of ’so’) years older than these guys, there are bound to be things that we don’t all necessarily agree on. Like the cold…I’m a really really cold person (I hate Winter) and so I want the heating on full and as I’m at the other end of the office to the heater, it takes a longer amount of time to get to me. In the meantime…they may need to take off their jumpers. That seems fair to me.
Then there’s the talking. Sometimes guru1 goes on and on…not about anything in particular (although maybe it is and it just sounds like ‘Geek’ to me) but I have noticed that when he does this for any amount of time guru2 can be seen sporting his ipod earplugs and that’s generally when I too head for mine.
Now today was one of those days. Guru1 started talking, guru2 popped in his head phones and I followed suit. I started out with some eighties ballads, but even after I had turned the volume up several times I could still hear him. Nope…I needed something that was going to take my mind off his constant chatter (I must point out at this time…it is work related chatter, just annoying) so, I scroll thru my ipod list of tunes…agh eighties disco, upped the volume a tad more and ‘voila’ I couldn’t hear him any more.
But that was the problem…I got so caught up ‘funking away’ to Lakesides "Fantastic Voyage" that I started to sing. I’m sure that would have been ok, except we all know that when someone who can’t hear themself sings…well…it’s a little like a dog howling at the moon or a cat with its tail caught in a door. Kinda nasty! I hadn’t sung too many lines (ok…it may have been a chorus or 2…but certainly no more) when I realised I was not only grooving away in my chair but singing along out loud for all to hear. I quickly turned the volume down to hear if the guru’s were discussing my singing. They were either speechless, deaf or too polite to mention it. I’m sooo hoping guru2 had his music up too loud to hear and guru1 may have been chatting to himself that he didnt notice. Either way…I’m not about to ask!
So…for your enjoyment…watch the clip. (now close your eyes and picture me…I’ve set the scene *wink* )
